How the education system works in Norway
Higher education in Norway follows a structure aligned with the Bologna Process. Bachelor's degrees typically take three years of full-time study. Master's degrees usually require two years of study after a bachelor's. Doctoral degrees are research-focused and generally last for three years. The teaching style often combines lectures, seminars, and group work, with an emphasis on independent study and critical thinking. The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, ECTS, is widely used to measure academic progress.
Language requirements
For programs taught in English, international students typically need to demonstrate proficiency in English. Commonly accepted tests include the IELTS and the TOEFL. Some institutions may also accept other international English language qualifications or proof of previous studies conducted in English. For programs taught in Norwegian, proficiency in the Norwegian language is required, often demonstrated through specific national tests.
Scholarships, funding and sports awards
The Norwegian government offers some scholarships for international students, though these are often competitive and may be limited to specific regions or fields of study. Individual institutions may also have their own scholarship programs, but international students should generally expect to cover their living expenses. It is important to confirm the availability of funding directly with the institutions.
Sports scholarships are not a prominent feature of the Norwegian higher education system in the same way they are in some other countries. While universities may have sports facilities and student athletic organizations, direct financial aid tied to athletic performance for international students is uncommon. Students interested in combining sports with their studies should inquire directly with individual institutions about any support or opportunities available.
After you graduate
After completing their studies, international students in Norway may be eligible to apply for a residence permit to seek employment. The specific conditions and duration for post-study work permits can vary. These rules are subject to change, and students should always consult official government sources for the most current information regarding visa and immigration regulations.
