How the education system works in Ireland

Higher education in Ireland is typically structured around bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Bachelor's degrees generally take three or four years to complete, with some professional programs extending longer. Master's degrees usually last one or two years, while doctoral programs often require a minimum of three to four years of study and research. The teaching style often combines lectures, seminars, and practical work, encouraging independent study and critical thinking. The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, ECTS, is widely used to measure academic workload.

Language requirements

For programs taught in English, international students typically need to demonstrate proficiency through standardized tests. Common examinations accepted include the International English Language Testing System, IELTS, and the Test of English as a Foreign Language, TOEFL. Other recognized tests may include the Pearson Test of English Academic, PTE Academic, and Cambridge English Qualifications. Specific requirements can vary between institutions and programs.

Scholarships, funding and sports awards

The scholarship landscape for international students in Ireland includes some government-funded schemes and a range of institutional scholarships. These can be merit-based, need-based, or program-specific. While some scholarships cover full tuition and living expenses, many offer partial funding. International students often need to secure their own funding for the majority of their studies.

Sports scholarships are available at some Irish higher education institutions, particularly for those with strong athletic achievements. These scholarships can help offset tuition costs or provide support for living expenses. The availability and value of these scholarships vary significantly by institution and sport. Students interested in athletic funding should inquire directly with the admissions or sports departments of individual institutions.

After you graduate

Ireland offers post-study work opportunities for international graduates, allowing them to remain in the country for a period to seek employment. The duration of this permission varies depending on the level of the qualification obtained. These rules are subject to change, and international students should always confirm the most current regulations with official government sources.
