Study abroad from China: what students and parents need to know in 2025

Studying abroad is one of the most significant decisions a Chinese family can make. In 2025, the landscape for international education continues to evolve, with new opportunities and considerations that both students and parents should understand.

The United Kingdom is the most popular destination for Chinese students in Europe. Universities like the University of Oxford, Imperial College London, and the University of Manchester have large Chinese student communities and dedicated support services. The UK's one-year Master's programmes are particularly attractive, offering excellent value compared to two-year programmes elsewhere. The Graduate Route visa allows students to stay and work in the UK for two years after completing their degree.

Australia has become increasingly popular, with the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, and the Australian National University (ANU) all ranking in the global top 50. Australia's post-study work visa (2–4 years) is one of the most generous in the world, and the country's proximity to China means shorter flights and similar time zones. Many Australian universities now accept gaokao scores directly for admission, making the application process simpler.

Singapore offers a unique blend of Eastern and Western education. The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) are both ranked in the global top 15, and Singapore's bilingual (English-Chinese) environment can ease the transition for Chinese students. These universities are highly competitive but offer excellent financial aid.

The Netherlands is an emerging destination that deserves attention. Universities like TU Delft, Leiden University, and the University of Amsterdam offer high-quality English-taught programmes at relatively low tuition fees compared to the UK or Australia.

For most international universities, Chinese students will need to demonstrate English proficiency through IELTS (typically 6.0–7.0) or TOEFL (typically 80–100). Some universities now accept Duolingo English Test scores as an alternative. We strongly recommend beginning English test preparation in Year 10 or early Year 11.

The application timeline is critical. Most UK universities require applications through UCAS by January, while Australian universities have rolling admissions with key intakes in February and July. Working with an experienced international counselor can help families navigate these timelines and maximise their chances of admission to top-choice universities.

Planning early is the single most important thing you can do. Start exploring your options in Year 10 — and let Noevo help you find the path that matches who you want to become.
