How Spanish students can access the world's best universities

Spain produces some of the brightest students in Europe, yet many don't realise how accessible top international universities really are. If you are a Spanish student — whether in a public, private, or international school — here is your roadmap to studying abroad.
The Netherlands is one of the best-kept secrets for Spanish students. Universities like TU Delft and the University of Amsterdam offer hundreds of Bachelor's programmes taught entirely in English. Tuition fees for EU students are around €2,200 per year — far less than the UK — and the quality of education is exceptional. The Dutch student visa process for EU nationals is straightforward, and cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Eindhoven have thriving international student communities.
Germany is another outstanding option, particularly for engineering and science students. Technical University of Munich (TU Munich) is consistently ranked among the top engineering schools in the world, and — remarkably — charges no tuition fees for international students, including those from Spain. You only pay a small semester fee (around €150) that includes a public transport pass. Many Master's programmes and an increasing number of Bachelor's programmes are taught in English.
The United Kingdom remains a top destination despite Brexit. The post-Brexit student visa process requires a few extra steps for EU nationals, including applying for a Student Visa (previously Tier 4), but the process is well-documented and manageable. Universities like Imperial College London, the University of Edinburgh, and King's College London actively seek Spanish students. Tuition fees for international students are higher (£15,000–£35,000), but scholarships are available.
Don't overlook Spain itself. IE University in Madrid and Segovia offers globally ranked programmes in business, law, and technology, with a truly international student body and English-language instruction.
One important note: the Spanish Selectividad (EBAU) is widely recognised across Europe. Most Dutch and German universities accept it directly, and UK universities accept it alongside predicted grades. Check each university's specific requirements early in the process.
